Clarifying Reports of an Attempted Abduction in the West Springfield District

Fairfax County Police have been contacted by numerous residents throughout the county regarding a string of circulated emails depicting an alleged attempted abduction of a young girl near athletic fields, located in the 9600 block of Burke Lake Road, on Sunday, May 4. To clarify, police were called to a home on the evening of Thursday, May 8, to take a report of a suspicious person. Officers determined a young girl spoke with a man in that parking lot on Sunday, May 4. The man asked for help with directions and using his GPS. Wisely, the girl declined to help him and walked away. The man returned to his car, where a female passenger was waiting, and drove away.

While this incident is suspicious in nature, officers have determined there was no criminal act. However, this incident serves as an example of the importance of speaking to your children about their personal safety and what to do when approached by a stranger. Parents are encouraged to report suspicious activity to police.
