Police were called to the 6400 block of Franconia Road just prior to 9:30 p.m. on Monday, August 3, for the report of a crash involving a car and a moped. The rider of the 2009, Genuine “Buddy 150” moped, 56-year-old Peter Matthew Kester, was traveling west in the center lane of Franconia Road approaching Thornhill Court. At the same time, a 23-year-old, female driver of a 2000 Toyota Camry, was traveling east on Franconia Road and attempted to make a U-turn near Thornhill Court. She apparently did not see the moped and turned in front of it. Mr. Kester attempted to stop, but could not avoid striking the rear, passenger side of the Camry. He was wearing a protective helmet and reflective vest. Responding officers attempted CPR on Mr. Kester, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Camry remained at the scene and was uninjured. Crash Reconstruction Detectives responded to the scene and the crash is still under investigation. Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in this crash.
