Early Morning Pursuit and Search Ends in Suspect Apprehension

A 20-year-old Woodbridge man was apprehended after a community search in the woods and neighborhoods off of Popes Head Road and the Fairfax County Parkway between 6:30 and 10 a.m. Thursday, November 5.

The incident began when an officer attempted to stop a 1996 Toyota Avalon for a traffic violation. The driver of the Toyota failed to obey the officer’s emergency blue lights and fled. The car sped away, then pulled over near Ofaly Road, where the driver and passengers fled from the vehicle. Additional officers, including K-9 teams, responded to the area to assist in the search. One of the responding officers was involved in a minor crash at the Fairfax County Parkway and Hooes Road. He was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Police searched the area for suspects described as three black males, in their 20’s and two black females, also in their 20’s. One man wore a red, hooded sweatshirt, which he later discarded and was found in a yard on Ofaly Road. Police received numerous reports of suspect sightings from neighbors in the Popes Head Road area and followed up on each report. They were reportedly seen in the woods, near a creek, and running through yards in the area.

Just prior to 10 a.m., an officer apprehended the suspect, believed to be the driver, in the woods near Fairfax County Parkway. He was transported to the Sully District Police station for further questioning. Warrants charging the suspect with reckless driving, speeding to elude, police and driving on a revoked license are pending. Additional charges may be placed pending further investigation.

Police also learned that a resident transported the four other suspects to a gas station located on Ox Road and Zion Road around 9 a.m. The four had knocked on a resident’s door and pled for a ride from the homeowner, telling him they were out of gas. Once at the station, the Good Samaritan questioned them about their situation and all four fled the area. The man then called police.

Given the time elapsed; police believe the four are not likely in the area. However, residents are asked to contact police if they observe any unusual or suspicious activity in the area.
