UPDATE: In-Custody Death Investigation Continues

Detectives assigned to the Major Crimes Division are in the preliminary stages of the investigation into the in-custody death of Paul Guida, 68, of Falls Church. As previously reported, he was found unresponsive in his cell in the infirmary area of the Adult Detention Center on Saturday, October 17, 2015 at around 11 p.m. He was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital by ambulance where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy was conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner on Monday, October 19 and we are awaiting the report of findings. They will determine the cause of death.

Initially, Fairfax County police officers were called to a home in the 3100 block of Holmes Run Road in Falls Church at 1:21 a.m. on October 1, 2015. They had received a report, via a 9-1-1 call to the Department of Public Safety Communications that Mr. Guida was in violation of a protective order that the residents of the home had filed against him. Fairfax County police arrived on scene at 1:35 a.m.

Once there, officers on scene confirmed that there was an active protective order prohibiting Guida from the property. Guida reportedly told the officer that he had just left the hospital and a taxi dropped him off at the residence. While he reportedly suffered from chronic, ongoing medical conditions, the officer conversed and had a clear conversation with Guida. He was arrested, walked to the patrol car and was transported to the Adult Detention Center. Once there, the magistrate issued a warrant for violation of a protective order (third offense). As ordered by the magistrate, Guida was transferred to the custody of the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office and he was photographed and fingerprinted, as a matter of routine processing.

The investigation remains active and is continuing. An update on the investigation will be provided within 30 days or as information becomes available.
