Crossing Guards in Fairfax County for 65 Years!
Today is Crossing Guard Appreciation Day, a day to express gratitude to friendly and wonderful crossing guards statewide. For us, 2016 marks nearly 65 years of Fairfax County Crossing Guards. They were first hired in October 1951 under the authority of our department’s first chief, Carl R. McIntosh.
This county started with 10 women, who would allow patrol officers to be free to handle other police matters. Now, there are 70 men and women dedicated to supporting their police department and helping students safely cross streets as they walk to and from school. We are taking a moment to say thanks to all of our crossing guards and encourage you to thank one today and every day!
