Police Investigate Pedestrian Fatal, Hit and Run Crash in Burke Area
Police responded to a report of a pedestrian struck in the area of Capella Avenue and Shiplett Boulevard on Thursday, May 12. An investigation determined a 33-year-old man was sitting on a curb in the 6100 block of Shiplett Boulevard, in Burke, just before 9 p.m. and for unknown reasons, got up and stumbled into the eastbound lane of Shiplett Boulevard.
A number of cars were traveling eastbound on Shiplett Boulevard; one vehicle was able to avoid the man but the second vehicle struck him. Initial reports indicated the striking vehicle monetarily stopped in the roadway just ahead but proceeded to leave the scene.
A group of people walking nearby rushed to the victim, attempted to render aid and called 9-1-1. The victim, Matthew Calendine, of Burke, was pronounced dead at the scene. Crash Reconstruction Detectives responded to investigate.
The striking vehicle was described as a dark-colored sedan, possibly a black Toyota or Honda. Speed does not appear to be factor at this time. Detectives are investigating whether alcohol was a contributing factor. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the exact cause and manner of death.
