Mason Police District – On Monday, August 15, shortly before 10 p.m., Inova Fairfax Hospital security called the Fairfax County Department of Public Safety Communications (DPSC) to report that a suspicious man with some sort of edged weapon was seen at a bus stop outside the “green” garage; on the hospital campus. An on-duty deputy with the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office, was in uniform, on assignment at the hospital. He responded to the bus stop and located the suspicious man. Preliminary information suggests that the man threatened the deputy with an unidentified object, prompting the deputy to discharge his service weapon, striking the man. Three Fairfax County police officers arrived shortly thereafter and immediately began to render aid to the shot person until rescue arrived. Personnel from the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department, already on scene at the hospital, arrived quickly and transported the shot person to the hospital a short distance away. His condition was initially said to be non-life-threatening. No deputies or officers were injured. Detectives from the Major Crimes Division of the police department responded and have assumed primary responsibility for the criminal investigation. The Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office will conduct an internal investigation and the deputy will be placed on routine administrative leave.
There is no further threat to public safety and there are no other suspects.
