Security Guard Shoots Armed Man Outside Community Center

Mount Vernon Police District — An investigation is underway after a uniformed security guard shot a man with a knife outside the Gum Springs Community Center. It happened around 1:15 this afternoon in the 8100 block of Fordson Road.

A preliminary investigation by detectives in our Major Crimes Bureau shows the security guard had approached a man by the bleachers near a baseball diamond regarding two unsecured dogs. The security officer was concerned because there is a daycare center nearby and children were going to be arriving in the area. The situation escalated and detectives say the man, who was armed with a knife, aggressively approached the security guard. The security guard shot the man once. The man got in his car and drove off. The security guard was able to get his tags and called 9-1-1.

We were able to find the suspect outside a home a short time later in the 2800 block of Joseph Makell Court. He was laying on the ground with a gunshot wound. We provided aid while our K9 team and Animal Control secured his dogs. The man was taken to the hospital and the injuries are not considered to be life-threatening at this time. There have been no charges filed in this case at this point. The investigation is ongoing.
