More than 2,100 Drunk Drivers Taken Off the Street in 2017; Over 500 Arrests by the DWI Squad Alone
Our DWI squad had a very proactive and successful year in 2017 with a total of 513 arrests for DWI! Last year was the first full year for our grant-funded DWI squad. This nine-officer unit was created in December of 2016, with the main goal of reducing impaired-related crashes through increased DWI enforcement. The eight officers and one supervisor that comprise this squad were exclusively picked due to their commitment to highway safety and their aptitude in identifying and apprehending impaired drivers. This unit is assigned to the Traffic Division of the Operations Support Bureau and are deployed throughout the county based on statistical data, citizen requests, and requests from station commanders. The squad’s equipment and salaries are federally funded through a grant and overseen by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Its members receive advanced training in DWI detection and drug recognition.
Overall the Department had a total of 2,139 DWI arrests last year, an increase from the two previous years, 1,957 arrests in 2016 and 1,841 arrests in 2015. The Fairfax County Police Department is committed to the safety of motorists in the County. As we move into 2018, we will strive to make our roads even safer through proactive enforcement and education.
