Update on Partially Decomposed Remains Found in Springfield

Franconia Police District – The body part found in the backyard of a home last weekend is now believed to possibly be that of a bear. Officers were called to the 5900 block of Brunswick Street in Springfield last Saturday after a resident found what appeared to be a decomposing human foot. Photographs of the suspected body part were sent to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner which preliminarily advised its appearance was consistent with that of a human foot.

The unidentified body part was sent to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for further investigation. After consultation with an anthropologist, it’s now believed the remains are likely a bear paw, and not human. Final confirmation should come with the results of forensic tests, which will take several weeks.

Detectives Investigating Discovery of Human Foot in Springfield

Franconia Police District – A resident called officers to the 5900 block of Brunswick Street in Springfield at noon today for possible human remains found in their backyard. Officers arrived and observed a partially decomposed human foot. Investigators are unclear of the race or gender associated with the remains at this time. Officers and detectives canvassed the neighborhood to determine if there was any recent suspicious activity in the area. During the canvass and search of the surrounding area, permission was given to check other yards for any potential remains. Additional bones were collected in a nearby backyard, but they appear to be from an animal and are likely unrelated. Detectives will continue their search of the area for additional information and evidence. The Medical Examiner’s Office has verified that the foot is human and will provide additional investigatory support. Further updates will be provided as they develop.
