Barricade in West Springfield Ends in Arson Arrest
West Springfield Police District – A man is in custody following a barricade situation that ended around 5:30 on Friday evening. Officers were initially called to the 5800 block of Rexford Drive around 11:00 a.m. for the report of a man acting erratically. Officers identified the man as 50-year-old, Zoltan Mogan, of Springfield. Mental health professionals from the Merrifield Crisis Response Center (MCRC) also responded and obtained an Emergency Custody Order (ECO) for Mogan. Officers attempted to contact Mogan in order to serve the ECO. Mogan acknowledged the officers but disregarded commands to surrender and barricaded himself in his condominium.
Patrol officers contained the scene while crisis negotiators and tactical officers responded. Several hours later, Mogan was observed setting fire to the inside of his residence. Fearing for Mogan’s safety and the safety of his neighbors, officers forced entry and safely took him into custody. The fire was extinguished and no injuries were reported as a result of this incident. Mogan was charged with arson and disorderly conduct. He is being held in the Adult Detention Center without bond.
