Holiday Tree Serves as Solemn Reminder of Public Safety Deaths

A 9’ tree decorated in ornaments with special meaning stands outside the entrance to the Fairfax County Public Safety Headquarters. During this holiday season, the Fairfax County Police Association sought a way to illustrate the epidemic of death by suicide and line of duty deaths that continue to plague our public safety community. The tree, which was donated by the Merrifield Garden Center, has 330 blue (Law Enforcement) ornaments and 176 red (Fire and Rescue) ornaments to represent the number of death by suicide and line of duty deaths nationally in 2019 year to date among police officers and fire and rescue personnel. A gold ribbon and silver 9-1-1 ornament represent death by suicide of 9-1-1 dispatchers and call-takers.

Earlier this year, the Board of Supervisors designated September as Suicide Awareness Month in Fairfax County.
