UPDATE: Driver Charged in Fatal Motorcycle Crash

West Springfield Police District – Detectives from our Crash Reconstruction Unit have charged the driver from the April 24th fatal vehicle crash in Burke.

Detectives determined Martin McDonnell, 68, of Springfield, was attempting to make a left turn onto Old Keene Mill Road from a shopping center when he was struck on the driver’s side by the motorcyclist. The motorcyclist was traveling westbound on Old Keene Mill Road in the left through-lane.

McDonnell was charged with Failure to Yield Right-of-Way. He was served a summons and released.

FATAL MOTORCYCLE CRASH IN BURKE

West Springfield Police District – Detectives from our Crash Reconstruction Unit (CRU) are investigating a fatal crash involving a motorcyclist that occurred overnight in Burke.

Yesterday at 10:05 p.m., officers responded to the intersection of Old Keene Mill Road and Shiplett Boulevard in Burke for a crash involving a 2007 Yamaha motorcycle and a 2005 Toyota sedan.

Preliminarily, detectives determined the driver of the Toyota was attempting to make a left turn onto Old Keene Mill Road from a shopping center when he was struck on the driver’s side by the motorcyclist. The motorcyclist was traveling westbound on Old Keene Mill Rd in the left through-lane.

The motorcyclist, Mohab Helmy, 50, of Burke was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The driver of the Toyota remained on scene and was uninjured. CRU detectives continue to investigate the crash.

There have been 10 traffic crash fatalities in the county to date in 2024. In 2023, there were 5 traffic crash fatalities year to date.
