Join Us in Honoring Fallen Officers during National Police Week, May 10-16
Today, we remember our own that died in the line of duty at the Rose Garden Ceremony at police headquarters in Fairfax.
National Police Week (Sunday, May 10 to Saturday, May 16) is a solemn tradition recognized across the country. Thousands of law enforcement officers, and surviving family members and children of fallen officers, gather in the nation’s capital. They commemorate officers who lost their lives in the line of duty and honor those who continue to serve and protect their communities every day.
Each year, there are approximately 60,000 assaults on law enforcement officers, and in 2014, more than 100 officers were killed in the line of duty, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. National Police Week ceremonies and events honor the ultimate sacrifice an estimated 20,000 officers have made and the risk an approximate 900,000 law enforcement officers in the U.S. are willing to take today, and every day.
Fairfax County police officers, auxiliaries and police explorers are participating in a variety of events throughout the region, to include the Officer Down Memorial Page 5K Run, the Police Unity Tour, Honor Guard competition and as support units for other events. The public is welcome and encouraged to join us as we reflect on our profession and memorialize those who have given their lives to protecting the safety of others.
Follow our Twitter and Facebook pages throughout the week for a glimpse of our personnel in action.
