UPDATE: River Drive Homicide; Detectives Sorting through Information Collected, Continue to Ask Public for More

Detectives of the Major Crimes Division have diligently continued their investigation into the murder of Johan de Leede that occurred on Friday, March 11 in the 6000 block of River Drive. In coordination with several department personnel, they have engaged the community to encourage anyone with information that could be related to this incident, to contact police. Actions that have been taken include:

• Increase in police presence from patrol officers to the Neighborhood Patrol Unit to the helicopter and other assets
• Police conducted another extensive neighborhood canvass in late April, utilizing detectives from various units in the Major Crimes Division
• Simultaneous to the canvass, a checkpoint was conducted in the area entering the Hallowing Point Community to reach out to motorists

(March 30) Update: River Drive Homicide

Major Crimes Division detectives continue their investigation into the murder of Johan de Leede. On Friday, March 11, shortly after 1 a.m., officers responded to 6017 River Drive for a report of an unresponsive man. They located Mr. de Leede inside the residence suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Officers rendered first aid until rescue transported him to a local hospital where he died a short time later. The preliminary investigation determined that de Leede was inside the residence when the shooting occurred. Police department personnel have increased their presence in and around the area since the time of the homicide. The latest canvass of the area was conducted during the evening hours of Tuesday, March 29. Another canvass is planned for Wednesday, March 30, again during evening hours. In addition, a community meeting is being planned and coordinated for the near future. The date, time and location will be announced once it has been established. Until then, the residence of the Hallowing Point community and surrounding areas; friends, neighbors, associates and acquaintances, are strongly encouraged to contact the police department if you have any information about this case.

(March 11) Investigation Underway in Lorton Area Homicide

Fairfax County police officers were called to a residence in the 6000 block of River Drive on Friday, March 11, shortly after 1 a.m. for a report of an unresponsive man that a family member believed had fallen. Officers located the 83-year-old victim in the residence with trauma to the upper body, started CPR and applied an emergency field dressings using a trauma kit. The victim, Johan de Leede, of Lorton, was transported to a local hospital where he died a short time later.

Preliminary investigation shows that the victim was inside the residence and was shot several times. The origins of the gun shots remain under investigation. (March 20) Officers Respond to Suspicious Noise; Update to On-Going Investigation on River Drive in Lorton

Officers responded for a report of suspicious noises near the 6000 block of River Drive this morning. At about 1:25 a.m, several calls were received at the Department of Public Safety Communications (DPSC) for reports of the sound of possible gun shots. Patrol officers and officers assigned to the Special Operations Division’s K9 Section conducted an extensive search of the area but did not locate any persons responsible.

The area was secured and detectives from our Major Crimes Division and Crime Scene Section responded to assume the investigation. The investigation is ongoing at this time, as the search for evidence and witnesses continue.

This is in close proximity to the area where Major Crimes detectives are continuing the investigation into the March 11 homicide of 83-year-old Johan de Leede of Lorton. The Underwater Search and Recovery Team (commonly referred to as a Dive Team) was deployed last week and searched for evidence which could yield further developments.

Franconia patrol units are and will be proactively checking the area and speaking to any resident who may have information. Franconia District Station and Major Crimes Division commanders also attended a local resident’s meeting to discuss their investigative process and ask for anyone with information to come forward.
