A preliminary investigation determined that a man, who was a seasonal employee of the Fairfax County Park Authority, and a woman, who was a caterer for an event, were having a verbal altercation earlier in the evening. As the event came to an end, the verbal altercation continued, and the suspect, the Park Authority employee, apparently stabbed the victim with a knife. The victim, 35-year-old Tyonne D. Johns, was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries and pronounced deceased by medical staff.

Police identified Kempton A. Bonds, 19, of Clifton, as the suspect, and took him into custody and transported him to a local police station. Major Crimes Division and Crime Scene Detectives responded to the scene to conduct their investigation. The weapon, a knife, was recovered and held as evidence. Bonds was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center, charged with second-degree murder, and held without bond. According to the Fairfax County Park Authority, Bonds has been terminated pending the outcome of this investigation.
