In-Custody Death Investigation at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center

Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office personnel called the Department of Public Safety Communications (DPSC) at 6:41 a.m. on Saturday, September 3, to report that a 53-year-old, male inmate had been found unresponsive in his cell. Sheriff’s deputies immediately initiated CPR. Rescue personnel arrived at 6:45, police personnel arrived at 6:53. After extensive efforts to revive the inmate were unsuccessful; he was pronounced dead. As protocol dictates, Police Department personnel from the Crime Scene Section and detectives from the Major Crimes Division responded to conduct an investigation. The operation of the Adult Detention Center (ADC) is overseen by the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office. The deceased inmate had been incarcerated at the ADC since September 15, 2015. He was assigned to a Direct Supervision Unit where inmates are routinely checked every 30 minutes. The Sheriff’s Office and the Police Department are working collectively to gather all information and to thoroughly document the situation. Nothing appears suspicious at this time.

The deceased inmate’s name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine cause and manner of death.

The average daily inmate population in the ADC is 1,050.
