Body Worn Camera Phase 2 Implementation Complete

The Fairfax County Police Department continues with its expedited implementation plan for the Body Worn Camera (BWC) program. Last week, Phase 2 of our BWC deployment was completed. Officers from our Franconia District and McLean District Stations are now trained, equipped and fully utilizing BWCs. Phase 2 has resulted in the FCPD having 218 new BWC operators. 

Our Body Worn Camera Project Team is continuing our commitment to fully implementing the BWC Program. Scheduling in the upcoming months is being coordinated to ensure officers assigned to our Fair Oaks District, West Springfield District, and Sully District Stations are trained and equipped. Additional scheduling is also planned for officers assigned to our Animal Protection Police, MCRC-Diversion First, SOD-SWAT, and parking enforcement.

Body Worn Cameras Phase 1 Implementation

The Fairfax County Police Department continues with its implementation plan for phase one of the Body Worn Camera (BWC) program which will launch on May 1, 2020. All stakeholder employees for phase one are nearing completion of their training in the use of the BWC systems. This includes affected police staff, Fairfax County Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney, Fairfax Public Defender Office, and court personnel.

It is important to note that year one of the three-year phased in project was funded in the previous FY 2020 Carryover Review as approved by the BOS. Phases 2 & 3 may be impacted by economic concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic. We are ultimately committed to seeing the BWC through to full implementation.
