Detectives Continue to Investigate Fatal Pedestrian Crash with Fire Engine

Reston Police District – Detectives from our Crash Reconstruction Unit continue to investigate the early morning crash involving a pedestrian and a Fairfax County Fire and Rescue engine.

At 2:18 a.m., officers and fire and rescue personnel responded to Glade Drive west of Laurel Glade Court for a woman who appeared to be intoxicated on the ground in the roadway. Preliminarily, detectives from our Crash Reconstruction Unit determined the officer arrived first and was waved down by the complainant. The officer did not see the woman lying in the roadway as he passed her.

The engine followed the officer. The Captain saw the woman and immediately yelled to stop and turn. Unfortunately, the driver was not able to avoid the crash and struck the woman. Fire and rescue personnel immediately began to provide advanced medical care. The woman, Ashley Boardman, 23, of Middleburg, was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced deceased.

Preliminarily, detectives do not believe speed is a factor in the crash and continue to investigate to determine if drugs or alcohol were factors for Boardman.
