Revving Up Road Safety in Fairfax County

West Springfield Police District – Starting today, the Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) is kicking off a week of heightened road safety. FCPD Motors and Patrol officers will be participating in a High Visibility Enforcement (HIVE) initiative — a program to deter and change dangerous traffic behaviors on Fairfax County roads – across the county.

In addition, this week, community members and visitors can anticipate a heightened presence of FCPD police activity and enforcement on Burke Centre Parkway.

The goal is clear: make the roadways of Fairfax County as safe as possible.

This coordinated and targeted enforcement effort aims at identifying aggressive drivers and addressing hazardous driving behaviors. It is part of the department’s ongoing commitment to reducing crashes and enhancing safety on our roadways.

Traffic safety is everyone’s responsibility. FCPD reminds drivers to:

  • Put the phone down and go hands-free.
  • Avoid distractions.
  • Be mindful of crosswalks and pedestrians.
  • Share the road with bicyclists.
  • Yellow means “slow down” and red means “stop.”
  • Don’t speed.
  • Allow ample time to get to your destination.
  • Keep your eyes and mind on the road.

By following these safety tips, you are playing a crucial role in making our highways safer by preventing unnecessary crashes. With your assistance, the FCPD can mitigate injuries and prevent fatalities resulting from traffic crashes.

Over 2,100 citations have been issued year-to-date along Burke Center Pkwy since July of 2020.

The Fairfax County Police Department continues to closely monitor its Crash Reduction and Prevention Plan, which emphasizes a data-driven approach to traffic enforcement, aimed at enhancing public awareness and ensuring traffic safety on all roadways. To achieve this, the Traffic Division collaborates closely with the Crime Analysis Unit to pinpoint top crash locations, identify traffic trends, and analyze driver behaviors.

Upon reviewing the data, the Traffic Division deploys officers to high crash locations and targets specific driving behaviors. Moreover, the Traffic Division actively participates in selective enforcement efforts to promote traffic safety among all community members. Engaging in conversations with community members and stakeholders, the division saturates high crash locations with high visibility enforcement and establishes partnerships with local and state highway safety organizations to effectively spread the traffic safety message.
