Detectives Arrest 14-Year-Old For Non-Fatal Shooting in Hybla Valley

Mount Vernon Police District – FCPD detectives have arrested a 14-year-old suspect responsible for last night’s non-fatal shooting in Hybla Valley.

At 5:05 p.m. yesterday, officers responded to a report of a shot person in the 7400 block of Vernon Square Drive.  The 19-year-old victim was found suffering from gunshot wounds to the arm and lower body. He was taken to the hospital with injuries considered not life-threatening.

Preliminarily, Major Crimes Bureau detectives determined the victim was walking to a nearby apartment. He was approached by the 14-year-old suspect who displayed a firearm and shot the victim. A nearby home was also struck by one round, where no one was injured. The suspect ran from the area. Detectives do not believe this was a random act.

Officers, K9, and our helicopter canvassed the area, but the suspect was not located.

Officers identified the suspect during the investigation and contacted his mother. The juvenile was not home when the officers arrived. Later that evening, the mother brought the 14-year-old suspect to the Mount Vernon Police Station.

The 14-year-old was charged with Malicious Wounding and the use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony. The juvenile is being held at the Fairfax County Juvenile Detention Center. The firearm was not recovered.
