Driver Dies from Injuries Sustained in January Crash

Sully Police District—A man has died from his injuries sustained in a January crash in Clifton.

On Jan. 24, around 6 p.m., officers responded to Clifton Road near Johnny Moore Lane in Clifton for a two-vehicle crash.

Detectives from our Crash Reconstruction Unit (CRU) determined a 2021 Ford Escape was traveling northbound on Clifton Road. The driver, Charles McCallister, 85, of Manassas veered across the centerline, resulting in a head-on collision with a 2017 Honda Civic. Three occupants of the Ford Escape, including two young children, were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and were later released. McCallister sustained life-threatening injuries and was also transported to the hospital. Speed and alcohol were not factors in the crash.

On Jan. 28, McCallister died at the hospital. Hospital physicians believed that the crash was caused by a medical emergency. On February 3rd, CRU detectives received notification from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner confirming that McCallister’s death was a result of injuries sustained in the crash, despite the underlying medical emergency being the cause of the crash.
