Fairfax County, VA – When some of the most challenging and sensitive cases are reported to FCPD, our Sex Crimes Unit is ready to investigate. These detectives provide a delicate balance of empathy, expertise, and unwavering commitment to the victims they work with every day.

In recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, FCPD stands alongside survivors, providing support and devotion through the dedicated efforts of our Sex Crimes Unit.

Who We Are:

Comprised of a second lieutenant, a sergeant, 11 highly trained detectives, a crime analyst, and an investigative aid, the Sex Crimes Unit specializes in investigating a wide spectrum of sex-related offenses.

What We Do:

These detectives handle complex investigations from rape and forcible sodomy to indecent liberties and serial peeping. Utilizing a multifaceted investigative approach, our detectives gather crucial evidence through techniques such as executing search warrants, analyzing electronic evidence, and conducting thorough canvassing of crime scenes. Employing empathy-based interviewing techniques they work in collaboration with our victim services specialists to ensure survivors receive the support they need.

Training and Techniques:

Training for detectives is comprehensive and tailored to equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively carry out their duties. These include:

  • Empathy-Based Interviewing: Detectives are trained in techniques that emphasize empathy and sensitivity when interviewing victims, witnesses, and suspects. This training ensures that they can establish rapport, gather accurate information, and support individuals who have experienced trauma.
  • Legal Procedures: Detectives undergo training in legal procedures, including laws related to search and seizure, evidence handling, and courtroom testimony. This ensures that they conduct investigations in accordance with legal requirements and can effectively present evidence in court.
  • Investigative Techniques: Detectives learn investigative techniques such as surveillance, undercover operations, and interrogation methods. This training enables them to gather information, uncover leads, and build strong cases against perpetrators.
  • Specialized Training: Depending on the nature of their work, detectives may receive specialized training in areas such as cybercrime investigation, white-collar crime, or homicide investigation. This additional training enhances their expertise and effectiveness in handling specific types of cases.
