Forging Paths to Recovery: Impactful Work of FCPD’s Victim Services Division

Fairfax County, VA – In Fairfax County, the commitment to supporting crime victims is embodied by the dedicated efforts of the Victim Services Division (VSD) within the Fairfax County Police Department.

Housed within the Major Crimes Bureau, the VSD boasts a team fluent in multiple languages who embrace a victim-centered and trauma-informed approach. They strive to empower victims and provide support throughout their journey.

During National Crime Victim’s Rights Week, it’s an apt moment to shed light on the indispensable work this team undertakes, as they offer crucial aid and resources to individuals grappling with the aftermath of traumatic experiences.

What Do Victim Service Specialists Do?

The roles of Victim Service Specialists encompass a wide range of crucial tasks, all aimed at empowering victims of violent crime and ensuring they receive the necessary assistance to move forward and heal. This includes offering emotional support, implementing crisis intervention strategies, and guiding victims through the complexities of the criminal justice system.

In 2023, Victim Specialists worked with over 3,000 victims and survivors of various violent crimes such as homicide, domestic violence, sexual violence, child abuse, robbery, and others.

The primary goal of the team is to ensure that victims are aware of their rights and the resources available to them. They facilitate access to emergency shelters, counseling services, legal advocacy, and financial aid for those facing hardship due to crime. By providing comprehensive support and guidance, the Victim Services Division helps alleviate the burdens that victims may encounter in the aftermath of a crime.
