Interpreting Investigations: Fairfax County’s Language Support Services Unit

Fairfax County, VA — The FCPD implemented the Language Support Services Unit (LSSU) in 2004 to bridge linguistic barriers and ensure every resident’s voice is heard during incidents and investigations. We continue to innovate and improve communication among non-English speaking community members to ensure sufficient access to all FCPD resources.

WHO ARE WE?

LSSU is a dedicated team of 25 detectives and language skills specialists led by one supervisor. They collectively speak over 10 different languages while serving Fairfax County’s diverse community. Their qualified language skills stem from their diverse backgrounds and years of experience supporting individuals.

WHAT DO WE DO?

LSSU provides linguistic support during investigative interviews for victims, witnesses, and suspects. With over 130 languages spoken in Fairfax County, they work to prevent language barriers from hindering detectives’ investigations. They provide in-person response and phone translations for officers on-scene. Once they are brought in, they assist in gathering and liaising critical information to advance investigations.

LSSU has approximately 800 support sessions each year. This reflects the substantial need for language assistance in investigations and victim interviews across Fairfax County. LSSU continues its commitment to serving the community to ensure equitable access for all residents, regardless of their English language proficiency.

TRAINING:

Language Support Services Unit detectives and specialists undergo a comprehensive two-week training program focused on translation and interpretation skills. This training equips them with the ability to accurately translate in-person statements and documents, enhancing their effectiveness in assisting with investigations.
