UPDATE: Driver Charged in Fatal Pedestrian Crash in Seven Corners

Mason Police District – Detectives from our Crash Reconstruction Unit have charged the driver of the 2012 Honda Civic in the Aug. 18 fatal pedestrian crash in Seven Corners. Detectives determined Yansi Martinez Gonzalez, 26, of Falls Church was driving north on Wilson Boulevard. She made an improper lane change from the left lane into the side of the Volkswagen Jetta which was also traveling north on Wilson Boulevard. The collision forced the Volkswagen off the roadway into the adjacent parking lot, striking Mr. Sweat as he was walking. The Volkswagen continued over a median and struck a parked 2010 GMC Yukon before coming to rest in a mulch bed. 

Yesterday, Martinez Gonzalez was charged with reckless driving and driving without a license. She was released on a summons and scheduled to appear in court. No mugshot is available.

Mason Police District – Detectives from our Crash Reconstruction Unit continue to investigate yesterday’s fatal crash on Wilson Boulevard north of the Arlington Boulevard intersection in Seven Corners. Officers responded at 8:38 am for a crash involving three vehicles and a pedestrian. 

Preliminarily, detectives determined the driver of a 2012 Honda Civic and the driver of a 2017 Volkswagen Jetta were both traveling northbound on Wilson Boulevard. The driver of the Honda was making a lane change from the left to right lane at the same time the driver of the Volkswagen was making a lane change from right to left lane. The Honda and Volkswagen collided together which caused the Volkswagen to go off the roadway to the right into the adjacent parking lot.  

The pedestrian, Albert Sweat, 62, of Maryland, was walking through the parking lot in the 6200 block of Arlington Boulevard. The Volkswagen struck Sweat in the parking lot. The vehicle continued over a median and struck an occupied parked 2010 GMC Yukon before coming to rest in a mulch bed. Sweat was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The drivers and passengers from the three vehicles were not injured in the crash. 

Preliminarily, detectives do not believe speed or alcohol were factors in this crash. Detectives continue to investigate and conduct additional interviews. Details of the investigation will be presented to the Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney to determine the appropriate charges. 

Victim advocates from our Major Crimes Bureau’s Victim Services Division have been assigned to this case to ensure the victim’s families receive the appropriate resources and assistance. 

This is the 13th pedestrian related fatality in the County to date in 2022. 

Year to date, in 2021 there was 10 pedestrian related fatalities.
